Hi, I’m Karen — a specialist science teacher who’s been lucky enough to spend over twelve years working in a SEN school. I absolutely love what I do. There’s nothing better than seeing that spark of curiosity when a student realises that science is for them after all.
Over the years, I’ve taught students with a wide range of learning needs, and I’ve learned that traditional approaches don’t always fit. That’s why I focus on making science practical, hands-on and full of real-life connections. I believe that when students can touch, see, and experience something for themselves, that’s when true learning happens.
I’ve built up a huge collection of adapted resources, creative activities and practical experiments — all designed with accessibility in mind. Whether it’s launching rockets in the playground, exploring how plants grow by growing potatoes in school, or making huge flames in the science room, my aim is always the same: to make science exciting, achievable and meaningful for every student.
I’ve seen so many amazing moments over the years — students who once avoided science lessons now proudly explaining their results, or asking if they can do “just one more experiment.” Those moments remind me why I love this job.
Through this blog, I’ll be sharing some of my ideas, resources and experiences from the classroom — the things that have worked (and a few that haven’t!), along with tips for anyone trying to make science more inclusive and engaging.
Science isn’t about being the smartest in the room; it’s about curiosity, creativity and the confidence to have a go. That’s what I try to build in my students every day — and it’s what I hope to share here too.
